The Thani Oladunjoye Old People Foundation (TOOPF), in partnership with the Age Nigeria Foundation, has hosted elderly residents of Epe, Lagos State, to a colorful celebration marking the 2025 International Day of Older Persons.
EpeInsights learnt that the event, held under the global theme “Older Persons: Driving Local and Global Action – Our Aspiration, Our Wellbeing, Our Rights,” featured a health walk, free medical checks, wellness talks, games, and a dance session—all aimed at promoting healthy and active aging.
Convener of TOOPF, Mr. Tunde Thani, described the event as a beacon of hope for older citizens who often feel neglected, emphasizing the need for society to protect their rights and ensure their wellbeing.
“Our elders built the foundation upon which we stand today. It is only fair that we ensure they age with dignity, joy, and respect,” Thani said.
Also speaking, the President and CEO of the Age Nigeria Foundation, Mrs. Oluwayemisi Oluwole, commended TOOPF for its consistent advocacy, noting that older persons remain vital to family and national development.
“They’ve done so much for their communities and deserve to be celebrated. They are the custodians of culture and wisdom, and we must continue to honor them,” she added.
Representing the Executive Chairman of Epe Local Government, Alhaja Shabi Aminat praised the organizers for prioritizing the wellbeing of senior citizens, pledging continued government collaboration to expand the initiative.
She also conveyed the commendation of the Epe Medical Officer of Health, who lauded the quality of medical care provided during the event and urged more communities to replicate such efforts.
Participants described this year’s celebration as the most memorable yet.
Chairman of the Older Persons Group at TOOPF, Alhaji Agara Ayinde, said:
“We were treated with care, from eye tests to physiotherapy, refreshments, and games. I even won third place in the draft competition.”
Other participants, including Mr. Mejindade Babatunde and Alhaja Toyin Tele-Olukoya from Majek, Ajah, expressed appreciation for the program’s educational and wellness benefits.
The event ended on a joyful note, with music, laughter and renewed energy among the elderly attendees, reflecting the true spirit of the day: celebrating life, dignity and inclusion for older persons.
