The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called for stronger collaboration between the government and professionals in the built environment at the 6th edition of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) Distinguished Lecture Series, held at the Ecobank Pan African Centre in Victoria Island.

EpeInsights reports that the Governor spoke through his deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, and underscored the importance of architects and urban planners in shaping the future of Lagos. He noted that as Lagos continues to evolve as a megacity and economic hub, partnerships with architects are critical to delivering sustainable, inclusive, and innovative urban infrastructure.

“Fostering collaboration with professionals like you ensures that our infrastructure and urban planning meet the highest standards,” said Sanwo-Olu.

“Our goal is to create a Lagos that is functional, beautiful, safe and inclusive for all.”

He emphasized that architecture is more than just building design—it is a key driver of sustainable development, economic progress, and environmental stewardship. The Governor urged professionals to speak up when needed, reinforcing the idea that the physical environment must reflect the values of a progressive and united society.

“Civilization thrives when we protect and enhance the environment given to us by God,” he added, while commending the NIA for its commitment to excellence and visionary thinking.

Delivering the keynote lecture titled “Harmony in Diversity,” Arc. (Mrs.) Olubukunola Ejiwunmi—NIA’s first female president and a retired Permanent Secretary in the Lagos State Public Service challenged architects to view their role through a broader lens of social responsibility.

“Harmony is not a passive ideal, it is an active pursuit that demands deep listening, purposeful design, and courageous leadership.”

She urged Nigerian architects to advocate for policies rooted in sustainability, equity, and cultural respect, stressing that architecture must go beyond concrete and steel—it must be driven by conviction and compassion.

In her welcome address, current NIA President, Arc. Mobolaji Adeniyi (FNIA), described the annual lecture as a cherished tradition, where past presidents of the Institute share insights and inspire the architectural community.

She praised the choice of this year’s theme, noting that “Harmony in Diversity” speaks directly to the challenges and opportunities facing professionals today.

“This theme is both timely and necessary. It will encourage us to embrace our diversity as a strength and work collectively toward building a more inclusive future,” she said.Sanwo-Olu Stresses Collaboration for Sustainable Urban Development at NIA Lecture
