As Lagos residents gear up for the Id-el-Kabir celebration, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) is calling on the public to prioritize proper waste disposal during and after the festivities.
EpeInsights reports that LAWMA in a statement on Wednesday assured residents that the agency has made extensive arrangements to manage the expected surge in waste during the Sallah season.
LAWMA Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said “residents must dispose of animal waste, food remnants, and packaging materials responsibly. Clean surroundings are essential to public health.”
“Eid-el-Kabir is a time of joy and reflection, but it should also be a time to care for our environment.”
LAWMA’s waste management teams and enforcement officers will be on ground across the state to monitor disposal practices and ensure compliance, the agency stated.
Residents were strongly advised not to dump refuse on road medians, in gutters, or open spaces. Butchers and livestock traders were also urged to use designated slaughter facilities to prevent environmental contamination.
Dr. Gbadegesin also emphasized the importance of using PSP operators for timely waste evacuation and encouraged residents to bag and containerize their waste.
Meanwhile, LAWMA is also marking World Environment Day 2025, observed globally every June 5. This year’s theme, “Putting an End to Plastic Pollution,” aligns with the agency’s campaign to reduce plastic waste and promote sustainability.
“Environmental protection starts with individual action,” said Gbadegesin.
“From clearing drains to sorting recyclables, everyone has a role in saving our ecosystem.”
To mark the day, LAWMA is partnering with schools, market associations and religious groups in a series of advocacy and clean-up efforts across Lagos.
He urged all residents to reflect on their environmental habits and join hands in protecting the natural systems that support life and livelihoods in the state.
