In response to the growing impact of torrential rainfall on communities in Ibeju-Lekki, Executive Chairman Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa has carried out a comprehensive on-site inspection of flood-affected areas, reaffirming the local government’s determination to implement lasting solutions.

EpeInsights learnt that the inspection tour, conducted alongside members of the Flood Mitigation Committee, covered Abule Pan, Shapati, Igbojia and Desa communities that have been grappling with persistent flooding over the past weeks.

Residents in these areas have faced disrupted daily activities, damaged properties, and heightened health risks as water levels continue to rise.

During the visit, Hon. Olowa examined the major interconnecting canal networks designed to drain excess water into larger waterways.

The inspection revealed severe blockages caused by indiscriminate dumping of refuse, illegal structures and other human activities that have altered the natural water flow.

These obstructions have not only slowed drainage but also caused water to overflow into homes, markets and streets.

“We have seen firsthand the extent of the damage and its causes,” Olowa said, addressing both the committee and community members gathered at the site.

“The canals must be cleared immediately to allow free passage of water. This is a priority, and I will ensure that the necessary work starts without delay.”

He warned that unless residents and business owners stop blocking waterways with debris and construction, flooding will remain a recurring problem.

“Everyone has a role to play. Government will do its part, but the people must take responsibility as well,” he stressed.

The Flood Mitigation Committee, which was established earlier this year, has been tasked with not only clearing existing blockages but also creating a long-term flood prevention strategy.

This will include regular desilting of canals, enforcement against illegal structures along drainage paths and community sensitization campaigns to promote responsible waste disposal.

Local residents expressed relief at the chairman’s swift intervention. “It’s reassuring to see government leaders here in person,” said Mrs. Abiola, a trader from Igbojia.

“We hope the cleanup will happen quickly before the next heavy rain.”

Hon. Olowa’s visit reflects a broader commitment by Ibeju-Lekki Local Government to invest in sustainable infrastructure and disaster preparedness, protecting both lives and livelihoods from the growing threat of climate-related flooding.
