As part of the ongoing Kayokayo Festival 2025, the descendants of Oke-Balogun ignited the third sacred Etufu on Thursday evening at the Kosoko Embankment Ground along Marina Waterfront in Epe, marking a significant cultural and spiritual moment for the community.

EpeInsights reports that the Etufu, an ancestral flame, symbolizes the enduring legacy of King Kosoko’s historic arrival in Epe following his exile from Lagos in 1851. The lighting ceremony also coincides with the celebration of the Islamic New Year, weaving together tradition and faith.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Kola Seriki, Chairman of the Oke-Balogun Descendants Group, highlighted the flame’s profound meaning:
“This flame reconnects us to our roots. It honors the resilience and courage of King Kosoko after the 1851 bombardment of Lagos and signals the start of the new Islamic year. For us descendants, it is a spiritual reaffirmation of our identity.”

Historian and cultural advocate Dr. Sanuth stressed the importance of actively preserving Epe’s rich heritage through such festivals:
“Culture is not just something to read about—it must be lived. The Kayokayo Festival breathes life into our history and educates younger generations about their origins.”

Adding a community-focused dimension to this year’s festivities, Barrister Bayo Okulu introduced the Street Feeding Initiative at the Ogunmodede Club, aimed at directly engaging local residents.
“Our celebration goes beyond tradition; it’s about sharing food, joy, and unity—the true spirit of Kayokayo,” Okulu remarked.

The event drew visitors from across Lagos and neighboring areas, who embraced the seamless blend of cultural performances, prayers, and meaningful community outreach.

The Kayokayo Festival continues to evolve, championing values of remembrance, renewal, and togetherness within the vibrant heritage of Epe.Oke-Balogun Descendants Light Third Etufu in Kayokayo Festival 2025 Oke-Balogun Descendants Light Third Etufu in Kayokayo Festival 2025
