In a bold step towards reshaping the educational landscape through mental wellness, the Executive Chairman of Lekki Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Engr. Rasaki Bamidele Kasali, has declared a war on mental health stigma in schools.

EpeInsights reports that the council boss, on Wednesday, convened a one-day seminar themed Mental Health Advocacy and Promotion, aimed at sensitizing public school teachers and students on the critical role of mental health in academic and personal success.

The event, which took place at the council secretariat, was facilitated by the Senior Special Assistant on Education, Dr. Bukola Lawal.

In her keynote address, Dr. Lawal underscored the urgent need to normalize conversations around mental health in schools.

She stressed the importance of open communication, the integration of professional counseling, and the inclusion of mental health education in school curricula to enhance both teaching effectiveness and students’ academic performance.

“Education is incomplete without mental wellbeing. Our schools must become safe spaces where students and teachers alike feel supported, heard, and empowered,” Dr. Lawal said.

The seminar brought together a cross-section of stakeholders, including the Chief of Staff, management staff of the LCDA, public school educators, and student representatives, all of whom expressed a shared commitment to advancing mental health awareness within the education sector.

Chairman Kasali reiterated his administration’s commitment to prioritizing the mental and emotional health of young people in Lekki. He announced plans for sustained engagement and programs to promote a stigma-free learning environment.

The initiative marks a significant milestone in the council’s drive to foster a holistic and inclusive approach to education in Lekki LCDA.
