The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has rolled out a sweeping enforcement operation targeting traffic violations, environmental abuses and general disorder.
EpeInsights learnt that the crackdown, which began earlier this week, is already making waves across key hotspots like Oyingbo, Iddo, Eja-Lonibu, Adeniji Adele, Sabo, Jibowu and Oshodi areas long plagued by congestion, illegal parking, and unregulated commercial activity.
According to LASTMA, 235 vehicles have already been impounded during the operation’s opening phase. These include: 38 private vehicles, 156 commercial buses (Danfo), 19 minibuses/tricycles (Korope), 5 haulage trucks and 17 inter-state passenger buses.
Their offences range from blocking pedestrian walkways and obstructing traffic, to setting up illegal bus terminals and completely ignoring traffic laws.
One particularly disturbing incident involved five articulated trucks caught unloading livestock and abattoir waste on the Adeniji Adele Bridge, a shocking breach of sanitation laws and a threat to both public health and the structural safety of the bridge.
The drivers involved are now facing prosecution.
The agency’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, says the directive is crystal clear: no more room for impunity on Lagos roads.
“LASTMA is now operating under a strict zero-tolerance mandate against traffic infractions,” he stated.
“All impounded vehicles will be promptly arraigned before the Lagos State Mobile Court.”
He emphasized that this operation is not a witch-hunt, but a much-needed intervention to reverse years of traffic mismanagement and urban decay.
“This is an invitation to collective civic renewal,” he added. “We are reclaiming our city.”
The ongoing clean-up is part of the Lagos State Government’s broader urban regeneration campaign aimed at boosting the city’s livability, safety, and environmental standards.
The initiative is being driven under the supervision of Hon. Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation.
The enforcement drive will cut across all five administrative divisions of the state; Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island and Epe. LASTMA teams, in collaboration with other relevant agencies, are deploying a mix of regulatory power, logistics, and digital surveillance tools to ensure compliance.
The agency is also calling on the public to get involved by reporting traffic violations or any misconduct by traffic officers. Complaints can be lodged via LASTMA’s toll-free hotline: 080000527862, with assurances of immediate response.
With this renewed push, the Lagos State Government is sending a clear message: Urban lawlessness is no longer acceptable.
The hope is that by holding offenders accountable, citizens will begin to see real improvements in traffic flow, public safety, and overall urban order.
