In a renewed effort to boost tree survival rates across Lagos State, the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) has introduced a focused strategy of planting trees within residential estates.
EpeInsights learnt that this initiative was underscored during a routine tree-planting exercise at Benson Olusola Housing Estate, Ibeshe, Ikorodu, where LASPARK General Manager, Mrs. Adetoun Popoola, was represented by the Head of Tree Planting and Maintenance, Mrs. Adebimpe Kuponu.
Popoola explained that LASPARK is extending its greening campaign to more estates across the three Senatorial Districts of the state to ensure that tree planting efforts translate into long-term environmental impact.
“Trees are life. Planting more trees means cleaner air, healthier lives, and a more sustainable environment,” Popoola affirmed.
She listed Banana Island, Victoria Garden City (VGC), Epe Alaro City, and Dolphin Estate as some of the residential communities that have already benefited from LASPARK’s tree-planting interventions, noting that these areas have recorded high tree survival rates.
As Lagos prepares for the 2025 Annual Tree Planting Day slated for July 14, the General Manager encouraged residents to see tree planting not merely as an annual observance but as an everyday responsibility and civic duty.
“Planting trees offers numerous benefits, restoring our environment, mitigating climate change, improving air quality, and promoting sustainable development. Trees go beyond aesthetics; they are critical for biodiversity and ecosystem protection,” she said.
Popoola also encouraged Lagosians to commemorate personal milestones such as birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, or memorials by planting trees, thereby leaving a lasting environmental legacy.
“This way, we not only celebrate meaningful moments but also contribute to building a greener and healthier Lagos,” she concluded.
LASPARK’s strategic focus on residential estates is expected to deepen community participation and ensure higher post-planting care and tree sustainability across the state.
