The Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) has marked a significant environmental milestone with the planting of 19,875 trees across the state within the past year, transforming urban spaces and championing sustainability through its flagship campaign, #TreesForLagos.

EpeInsights reports that the campaign, designed to improve air quality, enhance green infrastructure and foster healthier living environments, has reached all 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas in Lagos.

Speaking on the achievement, LASPARK’s General Manager, Mrs. Adetoun Popoola, emphasized that the initiative is about more than planting trees. “For us at LASPARK, tree planting isn’t just about the environment it’s about health, identity and legacy. We want Lagosians to feel proud of their surroundings and inspired to contribute to them,” she said.

Under her leadership, the campaign has grown into a state-wide movement with strategic partnerships involving private developers, schools, civil society organisations, faith-based institutions, and individual volunteers. Public spaces, highways, estates, educational institutions, and commercial properties have all been part of the greening drive.

In addition to tree planting, LASPARK has introduced green initiatives into school ceremonies, promoted green building certifications, and incorporated environmental education into community outreach programs.LASPARK Boss Leads Statewide Greening Campaign as Agency Plants Over 19,000 Trees in One Year

These efforts have ignited widespread civic participation and a renewed sense of environmental stewardship among residents.

Popoola highlighted the far-reaching environmental benefits of the initiative, noting that the newly planted trees are expected to help improve air quality, lower urban temperatures, strengthen flood resilience, and support ecological stability in Lagos.

“With the successful planting of 19,875 trees as of July 2025, we are now turning our focus to the next phase,” she announced.

“This includes expanding green corridors, forming community maintenance groups, and embedding nature-based learning in schools.”

She reaffirmed LASPARK’s commitment to a long-term vision of a greener and more sustainable Lagos. “This is only the beginning. Our goal is to instill a deep-rooted culture of environmental responsibility that will endure for generations,” Popoola said.

The agency’s progress underscores the growing importance of urban forestry and environmental consciousness in Africa’s largest city, as Lagos continues its journey toward becoming a model green metropolis.
