LASG Warns Residents of State-Owned Housing Estates Against Violating Regulations

The Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning to residents of its government-owned housing estates to desist from violating the established rules and regulations guiding estate living.

EpeInsights gathered that the move is part of efforts to ensure sustainability, promote orderly development, and uphold the original design and purpose of the estates.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Housing, Engr. Abdulhafis Toriola, made this known during a meeting with executive members of the Oba Adeyinka Oyekan Housing Estate Residents Association. Represented by the Director of Legal Services, Barrister Bukade Idowu-Koya, the Permanent Secretary emphasized that voluntary compliance with estate guidelines is a civic duty and essential to maintaining the integrity of the housing schemes.

Toriola reminded residents that the terms of their Letter of Allocation, Memorandum of Understanding, and Deed of Sublease clearly state the dos and don’ts of estate living, adding that the government’s intention is to maintain eco-friendly and sustainable homes in line with the THEMES Plus Agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration.

During the meeting, the Assistant Head of the Monitoring and Compliance Unit, Builder Rasidat Ogunlaja, addressed several common violations observed across estates.

These include repainting of external walls without approval, defaulting on service charges, unauthorized rebuilding and erection of structures, conversion of residential properties to commercial use, creation of environmental hazards, subletting of housing units and illegal use of estate setback areas as marketplaces or for other unlawful purposes.

She noted that the state now has zero tolerance for such contraventions and advised any resident currently in violation to visit the Ministry of Housing at Alausa to seek approval and regularize their actions.

Responding to concerns raised by the executive members of the Oba Adeyinka Oyekan Housing Estate, Barrister Idowu-Koya stated that the future of the estate rests on the willingness of residents to abide by the established guidelines. She disclosed that the Ministry’s technical and compliance teams would soon carry out a joint inspection of the estate alongside residents to ensure alignment with government standards.

Also present at the meeting were Barrister Oyeronke Oyetunde, who led the estate delegation; Alhaja Kudirat Moyosore-Brimidi, former vice chairman and ex-officio; Mr. Philip Ugbe, an ex-officio member; and the estate’s Facility Manager, Mr. Moronike Elijah.

The Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment to promoting good governance, environmental sustainability, and livable communities across all its housing estates as part of the broader goal of achieving a Greater Lagos.
