As part of ongoing efforts to address the challenges bedevilling public transportation, driving school operators in Lagos State have been urged to deliver qualitative driver education and shun practices that undermine government’s vision of a safer, more efficient traffic system.
EpeInsights reports that the charge was given by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, at the 2025 Train-the-Trainer Workshop organised by the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI) for driving school operators and instructors.
The event, themed “Drivers’ Education: Panacea to Economic Growth and Development,” was held at the STO Resource Centre, CBD Alausa, Ikeja.
Highlighting the urgency, Osiyemi noted that Lagos with over 20 million residents, six million registered vehicles, and more than 15 million daily motorised trips, faces the risk of public health crises, traffic gridlock and massive productivity loss if drivers are not properly trained.
“If this scale of movement is properly managed by competent drivers, Lagos’ transport ecosystem will continue to drive economic growth not just for the state, but for Nigeria and the West African subregion,” Osiyemi said.
He stressed that the workshop aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus Agenda and global goals such as the United Nations Decade of Action on Road Safety, which identifies qualitative driver education as a key tool in reducing road traffic injuries and fatalities.
The Commissioner also commended LASDRI for innovations such as the computer-based recertification test, harmonised three-window training, data-driven training models, and its regular “Ember Months” safety advocacy campaign.
In her welcome remarks, General Manager of LASDRI, Mrs. Tiamiyu Afusat, said the workshop provides a platform for stakeholders to discuss government policies and transportation challenges with a view to enhancing service delivery.
“By investing in driver’s education, we are not just teaching people how to operate a vehicle; we are instilling responsibility, safety awareness, and respect for other road users, pedestrians, cyclists and motorists alike,” she noted.
Also speaking, the General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Olalekan Bakare Oki, represented by Quarter Master Jubrill Oshodi, urged participants to see the training as a call to enforce compliance with traffic rules through quality driver education.
The event drew more than 200 driving school operators, government officials, and representatives of road transport unions, underscoring the state’s commitment to improving traffic culture and reducing accidents on Lagos roads.
