In a significant move to strengthen emergency healthcare delivery, the Lagos State Government has conducted a four-day intensive training programme aimed at equipping health workers with essential life-saving skills. The initiative, themed “Basic Life-Saving Skills,” took place from July 28 to 31, 2025, in Ikeja.
EpeInsights learnt that the training, organised by Lagos State Health District V in collaboration with the Health Emergency Initiative (HEI), brought together healthcare professionals from across the district.
The programme was designed to enhance the emergency response capacity of frontline health personnel, providing both theoretical knowledge and hands-on practice in critical care techniques.
Speaking during the closing session, Dr. Oladapo Asiyanbi, Permanent Secretary of Health District V, emphasized the government’s commitment to public health safety through continuous professional development.
“It is imperative that we continue to build the capacity of our healthcare workers to respond effectively during emergencies. Saving lives begins with having the right skills, and that is what we are committed to delivering for the good of every Lagosian,” he stated.
The training modules included Emergency First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Trauma Management, and other vital interventions used in life-threatening situations.
Participants also engaged in real-life simulations, aimed at boosting confidence and ensuring competence in applying techniques during high-pressure emergencies.
Dr. Asiyanbi noted that the initiative aligns with Lagos State’s broader health sector strategy, which prioritizes readiness, rapid response and resilience in the face of health crises.
“Developing a health workforce that is not only well-informed but also emergency-ready is central to achieving improved public health outcomes. We are investing in people who save lives,” he added.
The Lagos State Health District V has reiterated its commitment to ongoing capacity-building programmes as part of its long-term goal to enhance emergency preparedness, healthcare delivery, and public safety across the state.
