Lagos has once again demonstrated why it is considered Africa’s esports powerhouse by successfully hosting GamrX 2025, the continent’s largest competitive gaming tournament.

EpeInsights reports that the event took place at the Landmark Event Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Friday, drawing over 1,000 gamers from nine African countries.

Participants competed fiercely in popular game titles including Street Fighter, Red Bull Kumite, EA FC, Mortal Kombat, PUBG Mobile and Call of Duty Mobile, battling for a multimillion-naira prize pool totaling ₦15 million.

The Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Lekan Fatodu, was present at the tournament and highlighted the State Government’s strong backing of the fourth edition of GamrX Africa Esports.

According to Fatodu, this support stems from the government’s recognition of the esports industry’s vast potential and the opportunity it presents to tap into a growing and lucrative market.

Commending the skill and sportsmanship displayed by participants, Fatodu also praised the event’s organizers for their dedication.

He conveyed appreciation on behalf of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, saying: “On behalf of Governor Sanwo-Olu, we want to thank you for your investment in creativity, commitment, and passion. You have created a unique ecosystem that fosters friendliness, sportsmanship, and great achievements.”

Expressing optimism about the future, Fatodu added:
“This is Lagos—it’s a pleasure to be here today. The state will continue to support this event to ensure it grows even bigger. With nine countries currently participating, our goal is to double that number next year and position GamrX as a reference point within the global gaming ecosystem. The potential is immense. The state can make it happen, Gaming Africa can make it happen.”

GamrX 2025 not only showcased the vibrant talent pool within Africa’s gaming community but also solidified Lagos’ role as a leading hub for esports development on the continent.

With continued government support and growing interest across Africa, the future looks bright for esports in Lagos and beyond.
