The Lagos Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has announced plans to spotlight the role of strategic communication and public relations in promoting sustainable agriculture and enhancing food security in urban communities.
EpeInsights gathered that this initiative will form the central focus of its annual event, PR Fest 2025, a weeklong celebration of communication, creativity, culture and community engagement, scheduled to hold from Friday, August 8 to Thursday, August 14, 2025.
In a statement, the Chapter Chairman, Dr. Samuel Ayetutu, explained that the emphasis on sustainable agriculture and food security was a deliberate move aimed at addressing some of the most pressing challenges faced by Lagos as a megacity and other urban areas across the country.
He noted that the decision was reached during the association’s monthly meeting and PR Clinic in Ikeja.
Dr. Ayetutu said this year’s PR Fest would take a bold and unprecedented step by connecting the practice of public relations to the issue of food security, with the goal of inspiring behavioural change and encouraging community involvement.
According to him, the event will provide a platform not just to celebrate public relations as a profession, but also to advocate for sustainable solutions using the power of storytelling and strategic community engagement.
Themed “Urban Farming for Food Security: The Role of Communication,” PR Fest 2025 aims to raise awareness about the importance of urban agriculture and the role of communication in shaping public behaviour, mobilizing stakeholders, and influencing policy.
The Chairman of the Planning Committee, Mr. Olabamiji Adeleye, emphasized the need for collaboration and participation from stakeholders and corporate organizations.
He described the initiative as a unique opportunity to shape narratives, build partnerships, and promote a healthier, more food-secure Lagos.
Throughout the festival week, activities will include mentorship sessions for students and young public relations professionals, the launch of PR and Leadership Clubs across tertiary institutions in Lagos State, and a PR Sports Festival and fitness day featuring sectoral competitions.
The programme will also include the association’s Annual General Meeting, a media tour of Lagos attractions, and the premiere of a documentary on urban farming initiatives within the state.
Mr. Adeleye stressed that PR Fest 2025 is not just a celebration of professional practice, but a call to action for communication professionals to use their skills in addressing real-world challenges. By drawing attention to the role of public relations in supporting sustainable development, the Lagos NIPR is setting the stage for meaningful conversations and long-term impact on urban food systems.
