The Lagos State Health District V has warned residents of Zongo Community in Gbethrome, Badagry West LCDA, against the dangers of open defecation following a cholera outbreak that has resulted in 14 deaths and 54 confirmed cases.
EpeInsights reports that the warning was issued by the Permanent Secretary of Health District V, Dr. Oladapo Asiyanbi, during a recent cholera sensitization campaign held with key stakeholders in the community.
Dr. Asiyanbi linked the outbreak to the widespread practice of open defecation in the area.
He emphasized the health risks associated with poor sanitation and urged residents to ensure all homes are equipped with proper toilets that have covers, in line with state regulations.
“We cannot return lost lives, but we can rebuild houses. Any building without a toilet facility will be demolished because the Lagos State Government prioritises the health and safety of its residents,” he stated.
He added that Sanitarian Officers have been directed to inspect all buildings in the community, particularly those lacking toilet facilities.
Private toilets operating without valid licenses, he said, will face legal consequences.
Dr. Asiyanbi explained that cholera is commonly spread by flies from uncovered toilets contaminating food and water.
He described open defecation as a serious offence under Lagos State sanitation laws and called for a minimum distance of 30 meters between toilets and residential houses or water sources such as wells.
He advised residents to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest Primary Health Centre if symptoms like diarrhoea or vomiting occur, warning that delays in treatment could lead to death.
He also urged food vendors to undergo health screenings twice a year to ensure they are not carriers of cholera bacteria.
Also speaking at the event, the Director of Medical Services, Dr. Amina Ahmad Bello, educated the community on the nature of cholera, which she said is caused by bacteria present in dirty environments and contaminated water.
She clarified that while cholera is not contagious, it spreads quickly through unsafe food and water. She recommended boiling drinking water for at least 60 minutes before consumption and storing it in covered containers.
Chairman of Badagry West LCDA, Hon. Gbenu Joseph, thanked the Lagos State Government and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for the swift intervention during the outbreak.
He commended the medical and sanitation teams for their response but criticized some residents for unhygienic practices that may have worsened the situation.
Hon. Gbenu also announced the completion of a new Primary Health Centre in Zongo Community, which is scheduled for commissioning soon.
He appealed for additional medical staff to be deployed to the area to enhance healthcare delivery.
