The Lagos State Government has firmly denied claims by former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, that it was behind the recent demolition of a property allegedly owned by his younger brother in Ikeja.
EpeInsights reports that the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, in an official statement issued on Thursday, noted unequivocally that no agency under the Lagos State Government carried out the demolition.
“We wish to categorically state that the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) or any other arm of the Lagos State Government did not carry out the said demolition,” the statement read.
Omotoso noted that the government had sought clarification from the agency responsible for building control and urban planning, and that LASBCA denied any role in the incident.
According to Dr. Olajide Abiodun Babatunde, the Special Adviser overseeing the agency, there was no record or authorization for such an action.
“We find it disturbing that Mr. Peter Obi would make such allegations without verifying the facts,” Omotoso added.
The commissioner emphasized that Lagos State maintains a strong commitment to due process, rule of law, and the protection of property rights. He called on residents to disregard Obi’s remarks, describing them as “baseless allegations.”
He further stated, “The Lagos State Government will not tolerate any acts of lawlessness or violations of extant laws. Anyone found culpable in illegal activities will face the full weight of the law.”
To ensure transparency, the government has initiated a formal investigation. The Permanent Secretary of the Office of Urban Development, Arc. Gbolahan Owodunni Oki, has been directed to oversee a probe into the matter. LASBCA is expected to conduct a full inquiry to uncover the facts surrounding the controversial demolition.
“The outcome of this investigation will guide any necessary steps to be taken,” Omotoso said.
The state government also used the opportunity to reaffirm its inclusive policy and ongoing efforts to ensure the safety, security, and property rights of all residents.
“Lagos remains a welcoming place for everyone to live and work,” the statement concluded.
