The Lagos State Government has refuted claims circulating online regarding an alleged update to the state’s Tenancy Law, labeling the information as false, misleading and the work of fraudulent individuals seeking to deceive the public.

EpeInsights reports that the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Housing, Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, in an official statement emphasized that the viral publication did not originate from any official quarters and urged residents to disregard the misleading content.

“The attention of the Lagos State Government has been drawn to a fabricated online publication stating that the Lagos State Tenancy Law has been updated to better protect tenants and regulate landlord practices,” Odunuga-Bakare stated.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Lagos State Government wishes to state unequivocally that the said publication did not emanate from the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA).”

She clarified that the existing Lagos State Tenancy Law of 2015 remains in effect.

While acknowledging that a bill proposing a new tenancy framework is under review, she stressed that it is still undergoing legislative processes at the Lagos State House of Assembly and has not yet been passed into law.

“The public, especially Lagosians, should note that the current Tenancy Law of 2015 is still subsisting. The bill for a new Tenancy Law is currently under due consideration and members of the public will be duly informed once it is enacted,” she said.Lagos Government Debunks Fake Tenancy Law Update, Warns Public Against Online Scam

The Special Adviser also disclosed that the Ministry of Housing is actively engaging various stakeholders including the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Community Development Committees (CDC), Community Development Associations (CDA), and traditional rulers across the five IBILE divisions in discussions aimed at addressing concerns around monthly rent payments and ensuring transparency in real estate transactions.

Odunuga-Bakare urged residents to remain vigilant and verify information from credible government sources to avoid falling victim to scams or misinformation.
