Calm has returned to Onosa, a community in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State, after a protest broke out on Friday following a violent clash between a police officer and residents.
EpeInsights gathered that the Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Moshood Jimoh, led an intervention to pacify aggrieved residents and assured them government’s commitment to justice.
The protesters, who had gathered in large numbers, demanded accountability for the incident which left some community members injured.
Addressing the crowd, Hon. Olowa acknowledged their grievances and pledged that government would shoulder the medical expenses of the victims as well as provide adequate compensation.
He urged the protesters to remain law-abiding and assured them that the welfare and safety of residents remained a top priority for his administration.
In his remarks, CP Moshood Jimoh disclosed that the police officer responsible for the fracas had already been arrested and was currently in custody.
Jimoh emphasized that the Nigerian Police Force would not tolerate misconduct from its officers and promised that the full weight of the law would be applied.
“The law will take its full course. No one is above the law, including our officers,” the Commissioner said, reaffirming the police command’s commitment to discipline and justice.
Following these assurances, the protesters dispersed peacefully, bringing an end to the demonstration and restoring normalcy to the community.
Many residents expressed relief over the swift intervention of both the local government and the police hierarchy.
The incident, though unfortunate, has opened wider conversations in Onosa about community-police relations and the importance of accountability in law enforcement.
