The Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) and former Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University, Prof. John Obafunwa, has been installed as the Balogun of Ilara Kingdom in Epe, Lagos State.
EpeInsights reports that the conferment ceremony, held on Saturday at the palace of His Royal Majesty, Oba Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, Alara of Ilara, brought together a cross-section of dignitaries, including traditional rulers, academics, politicians and business leaders.
Oba Ogunsanwo explained that the chieftaincy titles were a way of drawing accomplished indigenes and friends of the community closer to the throne, with the aim of advancing the growth and development of Ilara Kingdom.
He urged the honorees to remain steadfast in service and to contribute meaningfully to community development.
In his acceptance speech, Prof. Obafunwa expressed gratitude to the monarch and the people of Ilara, describing the Balogun title as a symbol of courage, leadership and responsibility.
He pledged to leverage his wealth of experience in academia and leadership to foster youth empowerment, promote education, and strengthen communal values within the kingdom.
“The Balogun title carries deep responsibility. I see it not just as an honour but as a call to serve, inspire, and uplift the people of Ilara,” Obafunwa said.
Other eminent Nigerians also received titles at the event, including Prof. Kemi Pinheiro, Ambassador Oluwatoyin Lawal, Jelili Olayemi, Abiodun Lawal, Dr. Olanrewaju Obasa, Chief Akinyele Oladeji, Toyin Oladeji, Rotimi Edu and Olayemi Edu.
The colourful occasion showcased Ilara’s rich cultural heritage and reaffirmed the community’s tradition of recognizing excellence and service.
