Ibeju-Lekki Local Government has taken a bold step toward modernizing urban management with the launch of a citizen sensitization program on automated street numbering and Geographic Information System (GIS) integration.
EpeInsights learnt that the initiative, spearheaded by the Executive Chairman, Hon. (Engr.) Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, seeks to create a reliable digital database of houses and streets across the local government.
According to the Chairman, this effort will tackle long-standing challenges such as delayed emergency response, uneven utility distribution, and inefficient service delivery.
“By adopting structured house numbering and GIS mapping, we are laying the foundation for a smarter, safer and more organized community. This will not only make public service delivery seamless but also boost economic activities through accurate data for planning,” Olowa said at the flag-off event held at the council secretariat.
Residents witnessed live demonstrations of GIS technology, led by technical expert Dr. Yemi Odumosu, who explained how digital mapping and real-time data analysis can support smart city systems.
The program emphasized how accurate addresses can save lives during emergencies, ease navigation, and attract investment by providing clarity for infrastructure development.
Stakeholders across the community including councillors, traditional leaders, industry players, artisans, and community representatives commended the project as a transformative initiative that would position Ibeju-Lekki for sustainable growth.
With this sensitization, the council hopes to secure active cooperation from residents to ensure that every property is properly identified and integrated into the forthcoming township map.
The initiative is expected to significantly enhance governance, improve access to services, and set Ibeju-Lekki on a path toward becoming a digitally powered smart community.
