In a decisive move to safeguard public spaces and ensure a cleaner, more organised environment, the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government under the leadership of Hon. (Engr.) Abdullahi Sesan Olowa has carried out a major enforcement operation against illegal trading along pedestrian walkways and road corridors.
EpeInsights learnt that the exercise, led by the Council’s Chief Technical Adviser on Environment, Mr. Lateef Ajumobi, was conducted on Friday across Bogije, Lakowe, and Ogunfayo communities.
According to the local government, the operation became necessary following the alarming level of disorderliness and encroachment in these areas, where traders had converted public walkways and sections of the road into makeshift markets.
This unchecked activity, officials noted, had not only disrupted free pedestrian movement but also posed safety risks by obstructing traffic flow.
During the operation, the environmental team cleared traders and unlicensed vendors off unauthorized spots and redirected them to designated shops and approved trading zones. The enforcement was met with cooperation from many residents, who commended the initiative as timely and necessary.
Speaking on the development, Mr. Ajumobi emphasized that the council remains committed to maintaining environmental order and will sustain such exercises until full compliance is achieved.
“This is about restoring sanity, ensuring safety, and promoting cleanliness in our communities. We will not tolerate any act of environmental degradation in Ibeju-Lekki,” he stated.
The Executive Chairman, Hon. Olowa, reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to create a livable, hygienic and investor-friendly local government.
He urged traders to cooperate with the authorities by utilizing only approved trading areas, stressing that public walkways and road corridors must remain free of encroachment.
The enforcement exercise was widely described as successful, with normalcy restored along the Bogije–Lakowe–Ogunfayo corridor. Officials assured that monitoring and follow-up operations would continue to prevent a relapse into disorderliness.
