The First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. (Mrs.) Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, has called on all stakeholders to unite in the ongoing fight against breast cancer, emphasizing that only collective action can help defeat the disease and save more lives.

She made the call on Saturday, October 25, 2025, while speaking at the Lagos Pink Alliance Mega Outreach, organised by the Nigerian Cancer Society (Lagos State Chapter) at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere.

Dr. Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by Mrs. Edith Egube described the event as “an inspiring and impactful gathering” that underscores the importance of unity, compassion and awareness in tackling one of the most prevalent cancers affecting women globally.

“The theme of today’s outreach, ‘Strength in Unity,’ could not be more appropriate,” she said.

“No single individual, group, or institution can win the war against cancer alone. It is through collaboration, awareness, and compassion that we can truly make a difference.”

The First Lady commended the Nigerian Cancer Society, Lagos State Chapter, for its sustained efforts in creating a platform that brings together government agencies, healthcare professionals, NGOs, private sector players and citizens to pursue the common goal of achieving a cancer-free Lagos.

She noted that breast cancer continues to claim lives unnecessarily due to late detection, lack of awareness, and limited access to care — challenges that can be mitigated through consistent education and early screening.

“Many lives can be saved through early detection, regular screening, and timely intervention,” she said.

“Awareness campaigns such as this are critical because they break the silence, dispel myths, and encourage people to seek help early.”

Dr. Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to promoting preventive healthcare and expanding access to medical services through initiatives such as the ILERA EKO health insurance scheme, community medical outreaches, and the network of primary healthcare centres across all Local Government and Local Council Development Areas.

She also highlighted her office’s advocacy focus areas, which include women’s health, gender-based violence prevention, and drug abuse awareness, noting that these efforts are rooted in “education, empowerment and empathy.”

“Knowledge saves lives, and support gives hope,” she emphasized.

“To every cancer survivor here today, I salute your courage and resilience. You are the true heroes of this campaign, and your stories remind us that cancer is not a death sentence — it is a battle that can be won.”

The First Lady extended appreciation to corporate sponsors, partners, NGOs, and volunteers, commending their contributions to cancer awareness and care delivery.First Lady of Lagos Rallies Collective Action in Fight Against Breast Cancer

“As we walk, exercise, and share in the activities planned for today, let us remember that every step we take is a step of hope — hope for early detection, better treatment outcomes, and a future where no woman dies needlessly from cancer,” she said.

Reaffirming government’s ongoing support for cancer prevention and control initiatives, Dr. Sanwo-Olu urged all Lagos residents to continue standing together in unity.

“The Lagos State Government remains committed to reducing the burden of cancer in our society. Our strength truly lies in our unity,” she declared.

The event, themed “Strength in Unity,” brought together health professionals, advocates, survivors, and members of the public in a shared mission to promote early detection and encourage proactive health practices across Lagos State.
