In a significant move for continental security and collaboration, top military leaders from across Africa and beyond converged in Lagos this week for the 4th African Air Forces Forum, an event aimed at boosting cooperation and exploring cutting-edge aerospace technologies.

EpeInsights reports that the forum, held at the Eko Hotel, brought together air force chiefs and defence experts from over 30 countries.

The theme “Strengthening Collaboration in Advanced Aerospace Technologies for Enhanced National and Regional Security.”

Minister of Defence, Mohammed Abubakar, delivered a keynote speech that set the tone for the two-day event. He described the gathering not as a ceremonial meetup but as a critical think-tank for shaping the future of air power in Africa.

“We are at a defining moment—facing threats that are complex, interconnected, and increasingly brutal,” he said.

“This forum isn’t just about technology. It’s about unity, strategy, and safeguarding our future.”

The Minister highlighted the growing threat of transnational crimes like drug trafficking, arms smuggling, and human exploitation.

He emphasized the urgent need for advanced surveillance and interdiction capabilities technologies that can help neutralize threats before they escalate.

It’s not just about having the tools. It’s about knowing how to use them responsibly. Abubakar also urged participants to explore how technology can minimize civilian harm during military operations—an issue that’s becoming more urgent in today’s conflict zones.

From unmanned aerial systems to cyber defence networks, discussions centered around the role of innovation in modern warfare. Delegates explored how African nations can leapfrog traditional defence hurdles by investing in smart, scalable technologies.

“Africa can’t afford to be left behind,” Abubakar said. “The time to harness aerospace innovation is now—not later.”

Events like this don’t just help military leaders exchange ideas—they also lay the groundwork for practical partnerships. Whether it’s sharing intelligence, coordinating airspace defence, or developing indigenous tech solutions, collaboration is the name of the game.

As Nigeria continues to play a leading role in regional security, forums like this highlight its commitment to driving not just national, but continental progress in defence innovation.Defence Minister, Air Force Chiefs Gather in Lagos
