Residents of Poka in the Eredo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State are calling for urgent government intervention following a near-tragic accident involving a speeding container truck on Sunday.

EpeInsights learnt that the truck reportedly lost control while negotiating a sharp bend and toppled over, blocking the road with its heavy cargo and causing panic in the community.

Eyewitnesses say the driver attempted to flee the scene but was quickly apprehended by bystanders and handed over to local authorities.

“There could have been multiple casualties,” a resident said.

“The truck was going too fast. If anyone had been nearby, they wouldn’t have survived.”

Although no injuries or fatalities were reported, the incident has intensified growing concerns about persistent road safety hazards in the area.

Community members noted that the spot where the accident occurred has long been considered dangerous due to poor visibility and the absence of basic safety infrastructure such as speed bumps, traffic signs or warning signals.

“This is not an isolated incident,” a roadside trader remarked. “We’ve had close calls before. The authorities need to step in speed bumps or proper signage could prevent future accidents.”

Residents are urging the Eredo LCDA and the Lagos State Government to prioritise road safety improvements in the area.

Some have called for the immediate installation of traffic-calming measures and clearer road markings to improve visibility and control vehicle speeds.

“We are appealing to the government to act now,” said another local resident. “We live in fear every day. If nothing changes, the next accident might not be so lucky.”

The latest incident adds to a troubling pattern of vehicular accidents in Lagos and underscores the broader challenge of infrastructure gaps in rapidly growing peri-urban communities.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident or outline any planned interventions.Container Truck Accident Sparks Community Outrage in Poka, Eredo LG
