The ancient town of Ilara in Lagos State came alive with color, music and tradition as dignitaries, traditional rulers, political leaders and community members gathered to celebrate the 5th Coronation Anniversary of Oba Dr. Olukayode Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, the Alara of Ilara Kingdom.
EpeInsights reports that the celebration, marked by cultural pageantry and unity, was more than just a commemoration of royalty.
It reflected five years of impactful leadership under Oba Ogunsanwo, during which he has become widely recognized for his role in promoting community development, inter-ethnic harmony, and cultural preservation.
Among the highlights of the occasion was the tribute delivered by His Royal Majesty, Igwe Sir Samuel Ikechukwu Asadu, the Ogadagidi of Edem Ani Ogwugwu Ancient Kingdom in Nsukka and Chairman of the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council.
In his goodwill message, Igwe Asadu described the Alara as a monarch whose influence transcends tribal boundaries.
“Oba Alara is a great man. He is not just a monarch but a brother to all, irrespective of tribe or tongue. In his reign, we have seen humility, wisdom, and a strong commitment to peace and brotherhood. His leadership has shown that traditional institutions remain vital in building bridges across communities. Oba Alara is a shining example of what Nigeria needs today – a leader who sees beyond divisions,” Igwe Asadu said.
Over the last five years, Oba Ogunsanwo has overseen initiatives that have improved infrastructure, empowered young people, and revived cultural heritage in Ilara Kingdom.
Community leaders and residents praised his reign for its focus on peace, inclusivity, and grassroots progress.
A respected elder from the community, while reflecting on the significance of the milestone, noted that Oba Alara’s reign has united different tribes and fostered a culture of tolerance.
“Oba Alara’s reign has been marked by peace and progress. He is a king for the people, and his efforts in uniting different tribes cannot be overlooked,” the elder remarked.
The anniversary celebrations featured traditional dances, musical performances, and blessings from clerics and community elders.
These elements not only showcased the rich cultural heritage of Ilara but also underscored the respect and admiration the monarch commands among his people.
For many in attendance, the 5th Coronation Anniversary was both a celebration of the Alara’s achievements and a reaffirmation of the enduring role of traditional rulers in fostering peace, cultural preservation and unity in a modern Nigeria that continues to grapple with diversity and division.
