The Alara of Ilara Kingdom, Oba (Dr.) Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo, marked his fifth coronation anniversary with a series of community-focused initiatives, including the empowerment of 300 residents and a large-scale medical outreach.
EpeInsights reports that at the ceremony held in Ilara, Epe Division, on Friday, the monarch distributed vocational tools such as sewing machines, grinding machines, and hair dryers to beneficiaries, many of whom are artisans and small business owners.
The initiative, championed by Olori Bolanle Ogunsanwo in partnership with the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) and a non-governmental organisation, was designed to promote self-reliance and economic growth within the community.
“No fewer than 300 residents and indigenes benefitted from the empowerment programme. My advice is for them to make the best use of the equipment for self-sustenance,” Oba Ogunsanwo said, urging beneficiaries to turn the opportunity into lasting livelihoods.
In addition to the empowerment scheme, over 300 people received free medical care through an outreach organised by the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR).
Services included dental treatment, eye tests and glasses, as well as checks for blood sugar and blood pressure. Drugs were also distributed to those in need.
NIMR’s Director-General, Professor John Obafunwa, said the exercise was aimed at improving the well-being of the people. “This medical initiative was designed to ensure our people are physically and medically fit. With my background in both education and medicine, it is my duty to give back to the community,” he explained.
The first day of activities began with a community fitness walk, followed by Jumat prayers and courtesy visits to the palace. The celebrations will continue with the conferment of chieftaincy titles on distinguished personalities.
For many beneficiaries, the anniversary was not just a cultural milestone but a moment of relief. Mrs. Fatimah Agbomeji, who received a free pair of eyeglasses after years of struggling with her vision, expressed gratitude for the intervention.
Similarly, Mr. Jamiu Adekoya, who benefited from dental care, said the outreach eased a burden he had long endured.
Oba Ogunsanwo, who ascended the throne in 2020, has used his reign to blend traditional leadership with modern community development, with this year’s anniversary underscoring his focus on health, empowerment, and social welfare.
