Kuti Mathew and AbdulFatai AbdulBasit, two of Nigeria’s emerging table tennis talents, have clinched gold in the U19 Boys’ Doubles event at the fourth phase of the Festival of Table Tennis, ITTF Africa Youth Championship,
EpeInsights gathered that the championship was held at the renowned Molade Okoya-Thomas Indoor Sports Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, in Surulere, Lagos.
In a thrilling final match, the Nigerian pair showcased grit and synergy as they triumphed over Tunisia’s Essid Wassim and Khaloufi Mohammed with a 3-1 victory, recording scores of 12-10, 11-7, 12-10, and 12-10.
Speaking after the win, Kuti Mathew was filled with emotion.
“I’m thrilled to have won a medal again. After falling short in 2019, it feels incredible to come back and not only reach the final but also win Gold in the doubles.”
His teammate, AbdulFatai AbdulBasit, shared similar sentiments.
“This victory means a lot to me. It reflects the hours of hard work and dedication I’ve put into training. It’s just the beginning—I’m already focused on the upcoming Africa Senior Championship in Romania.”
The victory was celebrated by dignitaries in attendance, including Lagos State’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotosho, and the Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, alongside several sports analysts and enthusiasts who witnessed the intense match.
Kuti and AbdulFatai’s performance not only brought pride to the nation but also underscored Nigeria’s growing dominance in African table tennis.
