Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is calling on architects and professionals in the built environment to collaborate more closely with government efforts because building a better, more inclusive Lagos isn’t a solo job.

EpeInsights gathered that the Governor spoke through his deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, at the 6th edition of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) Distinguished Lecture Series, held at the Ecobank Pan African Centre, Victoria Island.

He highlighted the vital role architects play in shaping not just buildings, but how people live, work, and grow.

“As Lagos continues to expand as a megacity and economic powerhouse, we need infrastructure and urban planning that reflects sustainability, innovation, and functionality,” he said.

“We must work hand in hand with professionals like you to create a Lagos that is beautiful, safe, and inclusive for all.”

Sanwo-Olu described architecture as a cornerstone of national development, influencing everything from economic progress to environmental sustainability.

He urged architects not to stay silent when their expertise is needed, encouraging them to speak up and ensure that development is guided by professional standards and ethical responsibility.

“Our environment is a gift from God—meant to be beautiful and liveable. But it must be nurtured and shaped by experts who understand the balance between design, sustainability, and community needs,” he added.

The Governor also applauded the Nigerian Institute of Architects for organizing the event and sustaining a culture of excellence and knowledge-sharing in the industry.

Delivering the keynote lecture titled “Harmony in Diversity,” Arc. Mrs. Olubukunola Ejiwunmi, the first female President of the Institute and a former Permanent Secretary in Lagos State encouraged architects to go beyond bricks and mortar.

“Harmony isn’t just a feel-good slogan,” she said. “It’s an active pursuit that calls for deep listening, purposeful design, and courageous leadership.”

She challenged professionals to build not only with technical skill but with empathy and a strong sense of responsibility to the nation’s rich cultural diversity.

“As architects, we are not just builders. We are stewards of our shared future,” she stressed.

Welcoming guests to the event, current NIA President, Arc. Mobolaji Adeniyi (FNIA), underscored the importance of the annual lecture series, which is delivered by past presidents of the institute. She described it as a platform for celebrating architectural excellence and sharing ideas that move the profession forward.

This year’s theme, “Harmony in Diversity,” she noted, is especially relevant, urging architects to harness their differences and collective strengths to build a more inclusive and resilient future.Sanwo-Olu Champions Professional Partnerships for Sustainable Development in Lagos Sanwo-Olu Champions Professional Partnerships for Sustainable Development in Lagos
