In celebration of the 2025 World Environment Day, the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) has taken its advocacy to the grassroots, spreading a vital message across the five divisions of Lagos State on the need to end global plastic pollution.

EpeInsights reports that this year’s theme, “Ending Global Plastic Pollution,” hits close to home for a state like Lagos, where plastic waste remains a growing concern for the environment, public health and economic wellbeing.

Engr. Adefemi Afolabi, the General Manager of LSWMO, highlighted the importance of the annual event, which encourages governments, communities, and individuals to take meaningful steps in protecting the environment. According to him, the celebration is more than a routine, it’s a call to action.

“Plastic pollution has far-reaching impacts from harming our waterways and marine life to affecting our health and livelihoods. This year, we’re urging everyone to act responsibly and support sustainable alternatives,” he said.

True to its mandate, the agency organized awareness campaigns and community engagement activities across the state, encouraging Lagosians to adopt more eco-friendly habits and take ownership of their role in building a cleaner, healthier city.

Engr. Afolabi also made a heartfelt appeal to residents, corporate bodies and community leaders to support government efforts by reducing their plastic footprint and promoting recycling.

“Ending plastic pollution isn’t just the government’s job. We all have a role to play and it starts with simple choices we make every day,” he added.
