The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) has shut down several public toilets in Sangotedo, Eti-Osa and various parts of Lagos Island for constituting environmental hazards and discharging untreated wastewater into public drains.

EpeInsights gathered that the affected facilities are located in Late Hon. Rafiu Olufunmi Ultra Modern Market, Sangotedo, and areas around Adeniji Adele Road, Offin, Balogun, and Oke Arin on Lagos Island.

According to the agency, the closures followed complaints from concerned residents about persistent offensive odours linked to these public toilets.

Investigations revealed that the toilets were illegally using pumping machines to discharge untreated wastewater directly into roads, drains, and nearby water bodies.

This practice not only pollutes the environment but also poses serious public health risks by increasing the potential spread of communicable diseases.

General Manager of LSWMO, Engr. Adefemi Afolabi, reiterated the state’s zero tolerance for environmental pollution and urged residents to adopt proper wastewater disposal methods.

“We must all work together to maintain a clean and safe environment. The health of our people is non-negotiable,” he stated.

Afolabi warned that the agency would not hesitate to impose strict sanctions on individuals or establishments engaging in practices that threaten public health and environmental sustainability.

He also encouraged members of the public to report any form of environmental nuisance to the LSWMO via their official helpline, 08022022397, or through their social media platforms: Instagram and Twitter @lswmomedia, and the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office on Facebook.

The move is part of LSWMO’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainable urban sanitation and protect the well-being of Lagos residents.Lagos Wastewater Management Office Seals Public Toilets in Lagos Island, Sangotedo for Environmental Violations
