A devastating accident occurred early Sunday on Eko Bridge, Lagos, claiming the lives of two dispatch riders after a 20-foot container fell on them during a collision involving two Mack trucks.

EpeInsights that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq.

According to preliminary investigations, the cause of the crash was excessive speeding and fatigue. One of the truck drivers reportedly dozed off behind the wheel, lost control of his vehicle, and slammed into another truck.

The force of the impact dislodged a 20-foot container, which tragically crushed the two dispatch riders, who were commuting on the route at the time. Both were confirmed dead on the spot.

LASTMA officials who were monitoring traffic in the area responded swiftly. A truck driver with severe injuries was rescued and transported to a nearby hospital in a Lagos State Government ambulance.

However, both truck drivers involved in the crash reportedly fled the scene, prompting an ongoing investigation to locate and apprehend them.

As a safety measure, the affected stretch of Eko Bridge was cordoned off, and traffic has been diverted via the Costain Roundabout.

LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the dangers posed by reckless driving—especially involving articulated trucks.
